The whole point of a road trip is to enjoy the journey, not just the destination. But 10, 15, 20 hours in the car can get pretty boring no matter how many times you stop to admire the scenery. Here is a quick list of things to do on a road trip so you can make the most of your vacation.

1. Pick a Playlist

One of the easiest ways to enjoy the ride is to listen to some good tunes. Pick classic road trip rock ’n’ roll like “Little Red Corvette” by Prince and Wilson Pickett’s “Mustang Sally.” Alternatively, you could choose songs that capture the essence of the cities you’re traveling through. For example, Willie Nelson across Texas, King Oliver in Louisiana, or T.I. through Atlanta.

2. Power Through a Podcast

A surefire cure for boredom is the fear and suspense of creepy podcasts on a desolate highway in the middle of the night. “Up and Vanished,” “Trace,” and “Gone at 21” are just a few scary road trip podcasts to keep you on the edge of your seat. If you’re looking to listen to something a little less spooky, try out “Homecoming” for a thriller or “TED Radio Hour” for something more thought-provoking.

3. Play a Game (or Two)

Games and activities are arguably the most entertaining way to pass the time on a long road trip, and there are many different kinds to try. Here are two family favorites:

If you’re into word games, Alphabet Story is a classic — and a perfect activity for a long car ride. One person in the car picks a prompt and starts the story with the letter A, the next person has to continue the story, but their sentence has to begin with the letter B. This continues around the car and through the alphabet until someone gets hung up, or starts with the wrong letter. It can get silly quickly.

If you don’t mind a little pre-planning, try a scavenger hunt road trip activity. Make up a list of items for your road trip scavenger hunt in advance — you’ll want to include a good mix of things that you are likely to see, and things that are a bit out of the ordinary to keep it interesting. Alternatively, you could make the scavenger hunt about things to do in the car — think group sing-a-longs, sleeping selfies, etc.
